Fisheries Sector Contribution to GDP Targeted to Increase
23 April 2004

TEMPO Interactive, Semarang, Central Java:Indonesian Minister of Maritime and Fisheries Rokhmin Dahur has targeted that the fisheries sector will increase its contribution towards Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) to four percent in 2005 and six percent in 2006.

Dahuri told reporters at the Indonesian Fisheries Research Center in Semarang, Central Java, on Wednesday (21/4) that the fisheries sector only contributed around 2.9 and three percent of this year’s GDP.

The minister went on to say that the low contribution of the fisheries sector has been due to the small amount of fish caught in Indonesia as fish-catching activities are centered in several areas only.

In the eastern part of Indonesia, for example, fishermen are yet to seek fish in the high-resource waters.

Dahuri added that illegal fishing activities committed by foreign fishermen, who have high-technology equipment, in Indonesian waters was another factor why the fisheries sector in Indonesia only provided a small contribution towards Indonesia’s GDP. (Dian Yuliastuti-Tempo News Room)
